Thanks to all the Year 6 students who completed last week's online homework activity. For this week Year 6 should try the activity below:
Learn how forces and simple machines can work together to create The Compound Machine
http://www.edheads.org/activities/odd_machine/index.shtml
When you have built your machine print out the finished machine and bring it to class on Monday.

Other new in pictures:
Year 9 have been investigating and comparing the energy content of  different alcohols.

Year 6 are working on their straw bridge challenge as part of their study of forces.

Year 7 are seen measuring the speed of sound using echos.

Many of our students have been busy with unit tests this week, so no new photographs I'm afraid.
Year 6 have been investigating various aspects of forces. Below is a link to an activity I would like all Year 6 students to try. Do the activity; record your results in the table; do the quiz and print out your score.  Bye the way, this activity is both fun and educational for all levels; so even if you're not in Year 6 you could still have a go. Good luck!

If you get the chance to come into school, come up and view the display boards outside the Science room. There's some great examples of students' work done by Years 7, 8, and 9. Below is the Year 8 noticeboard on Microorganisms and Medicine.

Here the Year 8 boys are demonstrating their electro-magnetic relay switch they built as part of their study of Magnetism.
Once again Year 9 have been busy in the lab. Here they are investigating how physical and chemical properties change during a chemical reaction.

Last week Year 9 made  a kind of  plastic using milk protein. . They moulded it into shapes in order to study its properties. Here are some of the finished results.

The following pictures show our Year 6 students investigating  the upthrust of water. The students  found that upthrust reduces the weight of an object, and that upthrust can be varied by increasing the volume of air inside the object.

And finally..............
This week has been bookweek here at Charter.  Year 7 have written some short stories about how they image life would be without the force of friction. The following story was written by Osh.

Welcome back after the half term break. This week's pictures from the Science Lab feature Year 8 making compasses, and Year 9 producing 'plastic' from milk. If you're interested in the science behind these activities ask one of the students to explain it to you. I'm sure they'll be happy to share their knowledge with you.

Some of the compasses made by Year 7. Can you spot the odd one out?

 Precipitation the milk protein (casein)

Separating the casein from the liquid whey.

 Moulding the "plastic'.
Let's see how these turn out next week.
